About

Who I am, and what I build

Muntaser Muttaqi · moon-TAH-ser moo-TAH-kee · 6 years · Feni (UTC+6)

I am a software engineer working mostly in PHP and Laravel. Since 2021 I have led web engineering at Gymscanner, a platform for booking gym memberships and personal training across a hundred-plus cities, which means I have spent five years living with my own decisions on a single product rather than handing codebases off and moving on. That is the part of the job I would recommend to anyone: you learn far more from the second year of a system than the first.

My default stack is Laravel with Livewire and Filament, Inertia and Vue when the interface earns it, Tailwind on top, MySQL underneath. I like the parts of the framework most people skip past — Eloquent relationships that model the domain instead of the tables, form requests that make invalid state unrepresentable, queues that do not lose work when a worker dies mid-job.

Outside the day job I build things and put them online. Filament Fakester is a small package on Packagist that fills form fields with sensible fake data in development. Al Quran is an ad-free reader I built for myself and then kept polishing. Most of the rest are experiments — a real-time audio monitor, a chess analyser, a handful of things that exist because I wanted to know whether they would work.

Lead Web Engineer

Gymscanner

Aug 2021 — Present5 yrs 1 moFull-timeRemote (remote)

Lead the web stack for a global platform that lets people book gym memberships, tourist passes and personal training sessions across a hundred-plus cities. Laravel on the server, Livewire and Vue on the front, working with a team spread across the US, Kuwait and Romania.

  • Own the web application end to end — schema, application code, interface and release
  • Built the booking and listing flows used by both sides of the marketplace: people looking for a gym, and the gyms and trainers selling access
  • Keep the codebase current across successive Laravel, Livewire and Filament major versions rather than letting it calcify
  • Work asynchronously across a UTC-5 to UTC+6 spread, which puts the burden on written decisions rather than meetings

Web Developer

Ontik Technology

Feb 2020 — Jul 20211 yr 6 mosFull-timeGulshan, Dhaka, Bangladesh

First full-time engineering role. Built client web applications on a Laravel and Vue stack, in an office where the feedback loop was short and the deadlines were someone else's.

  • Delivered client applications on Laravel with Vue and Blade front-ends
  • Learned the framework properly — Eloquent, queues, validation, auth — on projects that had to actually work
  • Moved from writing features to owning them through review, deploy and the bug reports that followed

Freelance Web Developer

Fiverr

Apr 2020 — Present6 yrs 5 mosFreelanceRemote (remote)

Ongoing freelance work alongside the day job. Laravel applications, Vue front-ends and the unglamorous maintenance jobs — upgrades, bug hunts and features bolted onto codebases someone else wrote.

  • Scope, quote, build and hand over projects solo, including the parts that are not code
  • Work directly with non-technical clients, which is its own skill and mostly consists of asking better questions
  • Maintain a rating good enough that most work now arrives through repeat clients

iammuttaqi/filament-fakester

author

One-click fake data for Filament form fields in development. Puts a sparkles button next to every text input and resolves sensible values from the field name and type — `email` gets an email, `latitude` gets a coordinate, `slug` gets a slug. Hidden in production by default.

iammuttaqi/al-quran

author

A minimal, ad-free environment to read, study and listen to the Noble Quran. Built for myself first, then kept polishing because other people started using it.

iammuttaqi/discord-bot-starter-nodejs

author

A stripped-back Discord bot scaffold for Node.js — commands, events and token handling wired up, nothing else. Written after setting the same thing up by hand one too many times.
